About The Event

Yoga Nidra, The Art of Conscious Relaxation

Directly translated, Yoga Nidra is 'union' or 'oneness' with 'sleep.' Similar to a guided meditation, Yoga Nidra is practiced laying down in a comfortable position supported by blankets and props. Awareness is then guided through the body in a systematic fashion to encourage a state of relaxation where theta brain waves are dominant- the same mental space where dreams are formed. This is thought to be the blissful space between wakeful awareness and deep sleep, and most practitioners oscillate between the two. It is from this state of relaxation that we can begin to withdraw the senses and explore the inner world, thereby expanding awareness and opening to deep self-healing.

In this workshop, we will discuss the context, use, and scientific basis of all factors at play during a Yoga Nidra practice. Starting with a gentle Slow Flow, we'll release any excess energy to prepare the body for rest. For those with a specific healing intention, space will be created to honor it's power. Throughout Yoga Nidra (approximately 45 minutes), practitioners will be lying down in a comfortable position supported by bolsters, blankets, and blocks, then guided into a deep state of relaxation. Elements of sound healing will be offered to heighten the effects of this practice. Props are available, but it is encouraged to wear layers as the body temperature drops during the practice. You are also welcome to bring any personal props (pillows, blankets), and a notebook and pen are recommended. Following Yoga Nidra, we will take time to integrate the practice and discuss experiences as desired.

Studies suggest a 30-minute Yoga Nidra practice produces the same benefits as 4 hours of REM sleep.
